Introducing for a limited time a Single Origin Espresso!

It takes a very special and balanced single origin bean to produce a great espresso. At Khona, we have found such a coffee - the Costa Rican La Magnolia. We believe that featuring a single origin bean allows the distinctiveness of the terroir to really come through.

Grown high up in the Tres Rios region this coffee is milled to exacting standards and first quality separation. The coffee is then sun dried to bring out its unique cup character which is incredibly balanced.

Roasted to a City, this complex cup has crystal clear brightness and excels at the top end of the flavour spectrum. The wet aromatics is lively and dynamic with citrus-flower blooms and the smell of sweet bread baking. In the cup there there is quiet but assertive acidity buffered by great sweetness and a clean, rich smooth finish. Look out for crisp fruity cocoa, hazelnut, floral and orange citrus notes.

The first time our baristas tried this espresso they fell in love with it. We are confident you will too...

Lets Kick This Blog Off With A Coffee Review                             April 22, 2009 - posted by Andrew Khoo

I've been bugging Oughtred to drop me off a sample of a coffee that I've heard lots about. Finally got my hands on 4Ibs of Brazil Sete Cachoeiras (or 'Seven Falls' for people like me who don't speak Spanish) and boy was it worth the wait!.

Grown in the flat highlands of Sul de Minas, in the Santos region in Brazil, this coffee:

  • is 100% Rainforest Alliance certified (environmental sustainability)
  • is Utz Certified (economic sustainability including access to education and health services for all employees)
  • is 2/3 natural processed and 1/3 pulped natural
  • won 1st place at SCAA 2008

Very different from our current single origin offering. The initial aromatics is of hazelnuts. The cup character is balanced with solid body, low acidity, a creamy mouthfeel and lingering smooth finish. Distinctly nutty (Alyssa's description) which I would describe as Chocolate Almond! The chocolate notes definitely comes through when the bean is roasted to a Full City.

Not an overly fruity flavour profile but when we tried it in an Amerikhona it was surprisingly complex for a single origin bean. It had many layers (much like an onion) starting with initial sweetness, followed by hints of chocolate, almonds and slight high notes of cherry. Drew noted that more citrus notes became apparent particularly as it cooled. Lots of subtle flavour nuances with every sip.

We then decided to try it in a 12oz latte to see how it would hold up in milk. No problems there. It was one of the best lattes I've tried. Very balanced and structured with neither side overpowering. The hint of Almond were omnipresent yet very subtle.

It goes without saying that we were very pleased with the results when we Aeropressed it and French pressed it. For this particular bean we preferred French Press.

Our baristas fell in love with it to the point they are asking me to feature it as our new single origin. Still considering it...
